Carriage Barns
The carriage barn was a common mid-to-late 19th century feature in Vermont. These small buildings sat at the rear of the lot, behind the house, and sheltered the horse-drawn carriage. When constructed at the same time, the house and carriage barn often reflected the same architectural style. Simple stylistic details or construction methods can often help in determining the date of the carriage barn.
The two carriage barns in the images below have six-over-six, double-hung sash windows, indicating they were likely built pre-1870. Those are the types of architectural details that can help date a carriage barn. Refer to the section on residential architectural styles to identify features that appear on your carriage barn.
