Richardsonian Romanesque

The Richardsonian Romanesque gained popularity in Vermont in the 1880s. Characterized by its heavy, rusticated stone surfaces, towers, and round arch windows and doors, the style often had a monumentality suitable to important public buildings. Henry Hobson Richardson, for whom the style is names, design a number of libraries in New England, included Billings Memorial Library on the University of Vermont campus, seen directly below.
