Foundations
The foundation, upon which the house sits, can help determine the age of a structure. Most structures have maintained their original foundations, as laying or pouring a new one is a very difficult task. Two types of materials are common for Vermont foundations:
Stone
Most pre-20th century houses have stone foundations, either rubble stone or cut stone. Occasionally a brick foundation was constructed, but it is not too common.

Poured Concrete
During the early 20th century, concrete foundations appeared and began to phase out the construction of stone foundations.
