Mansard

The mansard roof is exclusive to the French Second Empire style, which was popular in Vermont during the 1870s and early 1880s. This flat-top roof with sloping, overhanging sides was also revived on a number of period revival structures of the 20th century. These later structures are generally quite small, having a small, square, two-story massing with the second story encompassed beneath the mansard roof. The 19th century Second Empire style is usually quite large. three-stories, and often rambling, as seen in the image below.
