Queen Anne
The front porch is inseparable from the Queen Anne style house. Popular during the 1880s and 1890s, the Queen Anne house boasted large, wrapping porches with decorative brackets and turned (carved on a lathe) posts. In fact, the porch itself became fashionable at this time, and a number of older structures began receiving Queen Anne style porches. A few basic details distinguish this style porch and make it easily recognizable.
The Queen Anne style porch is most notably characterized by its turned posts. Carved on a lathe, these posts featured an endless variety of intricately detailed designs. Decorative brackets and railings of turned spindles also define the Queen Anne porch. Occasionally, as seen in the bottom image, small spindles lined the upper part of the porch, just below the roof.
