U.S and State Highways
In 1924, the U.S. and State Routes were paved and numbered. This was the first massive road project and the first time the nation was connected by a safe and efficient road highway system.
The pair of images represent Route 104 in Vermont before and after its paving. Notice how it was also widened to accommodate two lanes of traffic.
