Interstates
In what was the largest earth moving project in history, the Interstate System was constructed between 1956 and 1966. In 1956, Eisenhower passed legislation to begin this monumental undertaking, and, by 1966, most of the Interstate System was complete.
In Vermont, construction of I-89 and I-91 began in the 1950s. I-89 opened in 1962, near Burlington, and was completed in 1970. I-91 opened around 1959 and was completed in 1978.
