Telephone
The telephone first appeared in Burlington in 1877. Most of the other Vermont cities and villages received telephone service during the late 1870s and 1880s. In 1900, telephone service began to spread into rural Vermont, and, by 1930, 61% of Vermont farms had telephones. During the 1930s, when a number of federally funded projects were underway, telephone lines spread to most of the remaining rural areas.
