Green Mountain Academy in spring

County:
Chittenden
State:
Vermont
Date:

Description:
The new photograph shows the same Green Mountain Academy in spring. There appears to be more trees in the new photograph. Primary species plant have begun the reforestation process in the school's front yard. The stone well is still visible in the lower left corner of the image. Derik Bibb from Mount Mansfield Union High School contributed the following commentary. Trees, other vegetation, and geologic aspects change much over time. In Vermont, there are now more trees than there ever were since the ice age. In the times when my original pictures were taken (1853-1942), Vermont was heavily deforested with much clear cutting logging throughout the Green Mountains. The old picture of the Green Mountain Academy was taken in winter and looks pretty barren but the dominant arboreal flora on the left appears to have grown, but it still remains. From viewing the photographs side-by-side, you can see that more saplings have sprouted and have grown. This could be a function of having an elderly person live in the building, as he is not as capable of yard work as he used to be. Vermont has long been called "The Green Mountain State" and verde mont translates from French to green mountain. With the liberal expansion of trees, this has once again become a reality. When all the forests were clear cut, the whole ecosystem of Vermont was changed, but now it has a chance to rise again into what it once was. These pictures are living proof of that. Jennie Taylor Demore writes on 2006-2-23: This was the home of Roy Kennedy and his wife when I lived in Underhill. He was a wonderful art teacher and taught me in the 1st and 2cnd grade at the Central school. His wife was a beautiful lady, but one Halloween she dressed up as a witch and made a halloween scene on their front lawn for tricker treaters complete with the iron cooking pot over an open fire. I was only in the 1st grade and was so afraid of her I avoided her for a long time. But I never did forget her. They gave a lot to the school and the children.

Vermont
Date:
1860 - 1920
Description:
The historic photograph shows a school building in winter. The words "Green Mountain Academy 1853" are posted above the buildings door. There are two piles of firewood stacked to the right of the door and on the right side of the building. A wheelbarrow is visible on the left side of the door. There is a stone well with a wooden roof in the left foreground of the image. Bare deciduous trees border the sides of the photograph, but the landscape seems cleared around the school. Boulders are visible under the snow in the school's front yard.
