- The new photograph shows the United Church of Underhill in spring seventy years later. Some of the trees in the foreground of the old photograph have been removed and an American flag has been added. Shrubs have been planted in front of the church. There are no electric lines visible in the new photograph. Todd Levin, a high school student from Mount Mansfield Union High, wrote the following commentary about the photographs. The United Church of Underhill has been a prominent building in the town of Underhill for many years. While the landscape has changed over the years, the building remains the same in all its splendor. The change in the environment is more difficult to determine, yet the understanding of how humans have influenced the changes is clear. In these two photos, the most important thing to notice is not what has changed but to notice what has stayed the same. Even in the circa 1930 photograph, the fields behind the church are barren of trees and show a large human-induced deforestation. The hills in the far background appear densely forested yet the church's backyard is barren from all tree life. This is due to the fact that people have used the land behind the church for farming. The deforestation for the purpose of farming is evident throughout Vermont, as it is a very agriculturally based state. The sad thing is that even after 70 years, the trees have yet to grow back. The fields have been in disuse for many years, yet the impact of the farming and the original deforestation is still evident today. Farming is a large reason that for the large part of Vermont, even the mostly disused field has turned into a grassland instead of a forest environment. This is a sad part of the history of Vermont, and proof for the way that humans have influenced the landscape of Vermont.
