The gas station played an integral role in the growth of 20th century roadside architecture. Although we look at gas stations as merely utilitarian today, throughout history they have reflected the architectural trends of each era. As the automobile became an integral part of American life, gas stations moved out from downtowns and spread across the highways and interstates the crisscross the landscape.
