Gas Pumps
As the gas station designs themselves were evolving, so were the gas pumps. Although the style of the gas station is an important key to dating a historic photo, it can often be misleading. Even though new gas station designs were developed with each passing decade, it was not always feasible to replace older stations with newer ones. A 1950s image could easily contain a 1920s gas station. The gas pump, however, is a more accurate tool for dating the photo. The technology for these fixtures continually evolved to create a more efficient, up-to-date system of dispensing gasoline. Therefore, gas station owners were more likely install new gas pumps than to construct a whole new station. Keep in mind that in rural areas, gas pumps were less likely to be replaced as quickly as in cities or villages.
