Socony and Mobil
Standard Oil of New York formed in 1911 upon the breakup of Standard Oil and dominated New England market. The early Socony stations in Vermont featured a simple sign without a trademarked logo.

In 1931, Socony merged with the Vacuum Oil Company, forming Socony-Vacuum. Socony-Vacuum patented the Pegasus, or "Flying Red Horse," trademark and the Mobiloil/Mobilgas brand name.

In 1954, Socony-Vacuum shortened the brand name to Mobil. The Pegasus logo appeared beneath the word "Mobil" on the company emblem.

In 1965, the Pegasus logo was redesigned. The lines were made bolder, the direction of the horse was reversed, and the image was placed on a white disk.

The current Mobil sign, seen below, no longer incorporates the Pegasus.
