Hats

The original uniform standards specified that a cap was required. The type of cap was not specified, although early images portray military style caps. The early image below, circa 1880, shows a brimmed cap akin to what was worn in the Civil War.

In 1873, the Panama hat was permitted for use in warmer temperatures.

In 1887, the police style helmet was introduced, as seem in the image below. As well, numbered badges were added to the uniform headwear.

In the early 1890s, straw hats appeared as another warm weather option.

Bell crown caps gained popularity in the 1890s and appear to have been the most popular hat style for many years. The bell crown cap, as seen in the images below, had stiff brims and round, drum shaped caps.

In 1901, a western-style hat was added to the uniform roster, having a stiff crown and a wide brim.

In 1953, the pith helmet was introduced with the Eisenhower short jacket.
