Mail Carriers

In 1868, the Post Office Department required uniforms for mail carriers. Regulations were instituted for every aspect of the uniform, from number and type of buttons to width of the band down the pants legs. Through the years, the Post Office Department exhibited an increasing leniency in the standards for attire, permitting a wider variety of hats, jackets, shirts, and pants. But the uniforms never failed to exhibit a pride in the U.S. Post Office.
