Murray

The Murray mailbox was introduced in 1860 to replace the original Potts lamppost mailbox. This larger box was affixed to the side of the lamppost, rather than wrapped around it, as in the Potts mailbox. The Murray mailbox was manufactured into the early 1880s, at which time a new box was designed. Note the rounded top and hatch on the side from which the mailman retrieves the letters. It appears that the mail was deposited beneath the arched lid, on the front of the box.
