Lamppost
The first corner mailbox was patented in 1858. This design incorporated mailboxes onto lampposts. The boxes could be applied to existing lampposts, or new lampposts could be erected with the mailbox already built in. Over the years, the Post Office Department attempted to find the most suitable box for street corners, commissioning a variety of designs through the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
