Steam Powered (1900-1910s)

Although still fuelled by coal, the engines of the early 20th century presented a number of changes in design. The popular 2-8-0 "Consolidation" wheel configuration (two truck wheels at the front and eight driving wheels in the rear) also continued to predominate.

The smokestack has become notably shorter, as have the rounded tops of the boilers, and the headlight has been placed directly on the front of the engine. The grille over the truck wheels is significantly less prominent, and the entire body of the engine appears to have been elevated to accommodate the more complex wheel mechanics. The long, tubular shape is still present, and the rear cabin begins to merge into the overall form of the engine.
