Cape Cod Revival

This revival of the traditional New England Cape Cod style was popular from the 1920s through the 1950s. The Cape Cod Revival loosely adopted the 1 1/2 story, eaves-front design and incorporated common Colonial Revival details. The average Cape Cod Revival features either small, gable-front dormers or one long shed-roof dormer across the front façade, multi-pane sash windows, and Classical door surrounds. Houses of this style may be adorned with a number of details or be very plain. Several examples of the Cape Cod Revival are discussed below.

This 1/2 Cape style structure features large, multi-pane sash windows and two large, gable-front dormer in the roof. The house is otherwise very simple and unadorned.

The structure below features the symmetrically organized façade that is common to the Cape Cod Revival. Like the example above, this house features small dormers and multi-pane windows. Also of note, though, is the Classical door surround, with flat pilasters (flat columns flanking the door) and transom lights (the long band of windows atop the door).

Another symmetrically arranged façade is seen below. The Classical door surround features flat pilasters and entablature (the molding atop the door).

The Cape Cod Revival below features a long, shed roof dormer on the main façade. The dormer alters the appearance quite a bit, making it difficult to recognize the house as a Cape Cod Revival. However, the 1 1/2 story, eaves-front design with the multi-pane windows and Classical door surround characterize the style.
