Colonial Revival
Around 1900, there was a backlash against the exuberant styles of the late 19th century Victorian era. Architects began reviving the traditions of Colonial architecture. A number of Colonial Revival subtypes evolved over the first fifty years of the 20th century, ranging from elegant high-style mansions to simple, modest mail order housing. Many of these houses closely followed the designs of their early American predecessors, while others loosely applied Colonial details in a modern, 20th century fashion.
