Hipped Roof
One of the earliest Colonial Revival subtypes was the hipped roof design. These houses were popular in the early 1900s and 1910s, often exhibiting details from the Queen Anne style of the late 19th century. Examples range from being heavily ornamented with Classical details to being relatively unadorned. However, the cube shape with hipped roof, dormers, and front porch or entry portico is almost unwavering. The following images illustrate the various designs common to this Colonial Revival subtype.
Symmetrical Façade with Prominent Classical Details
Details often include a prominent front porch or portico with columns and pediment, Palladian window (a round arch window flanked by two rectangular windows), enriched cornice with dentils or modillions (tooth shaped projections beneath the eaves), multi-pane windows, and flat pilasters (flat columns), side and transom lights (long bands of windows), or fanlight (round arched window) adorning the main entrance.

Simple, Asymmetrical Façade with few Classical Details
A simple Colonial Revival style porch (having plain round columns) usually spans the front façade. Other simplified Classical details may appear, such as small modillions beneath the eaves or sidelights flanking the main entrance.

Queen Anne Details
One or two features left over from the late 19th century Queen Anne style may appear in conjunction with the Classical details, such as turned porch posts (sculpted on a lathe), large picture windows with stained glass transoms, or some decorative woodwork (also called stickwork). Houses with Queen Anne details likely date from the early 1900s. Note in the decorative woodwork on the porch in the image on the left, the stickwork around the second story windows in the image on the right, and the turned porch posts and large picture windows with stained glass transoms in the image on the right and the image at the bottom.
