Street

When City Free Mail Delivery was established in 1863, mail carriers were granted permission to request that towns and cities place street names at intersections and number houses. This had the most significant impact on large urban areas. In the early 20th century cities and towns urged to post street names. In rural areas, this process was probably a lot slower than the larger urban areas of Vermont.

Earlier street signs were often mounted on the poles of streetlamps or directly on the sides of buildings, in addition to separate poles. These signs were more decorative than many of those seen today, having ornate brackets or poles.
