Basketball
Vermont's first official basketball team formed at the University of Vermont in 1900. The sport was still relatively rare at this time but began to grow during the early 20th century. In 1908, basketball was quite big in St. Johnsbury. Uniform styles, too, can help in narrowing the date of an image.
Early basketball uniforms were similar to those worn today. Long, baggy shorts and tank tops were typically worn. Another interesting feature, however, are the tall socks. Long socks were worn and rolled down at the top just below the knee, as seen in the images below. During the 1920s, shorts became quite short and snug, and jerseys also became much more snug by the 1940s.
