Following the Civil War, sporting, recreational, and outdoor activities flourished. What had once been pastimes only for the wealthy were becoming accessible to all. A rise of winter sports and recreation, an appreciation of the great outdoors, and the introduction of both team and individual sports mark the late 19^th and early 20^th centuries.
