Biking

During the 1880s, a number of cycling clubs formed all over the country, including Vermont. By the 1890s, cycling had swept the nation, and the fad continued heavily into the early 20th century. Women in particular caught on to the craze, as it gave them more freedom. Although women's clothing evolved at this time, allowing room for more casual, sporting attire, the biking outfits that women wore at this time were still quite cumbersome. For more information on biking, refer to the "Bicycles" section on the main page.

The group of women in the image below don the traditional skirt, blouse, and straw hat of late 19th and early 20th century cycling.
